Inviting Jesus into the Chaos of Everyday Life

Hey, ladies! If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably spent more time than you’d like to admit searching for that perfect organizational hack that’ll finally make your life run like a well-oiled machine. You know, the kind that turns your chaotic mornings into serene, Pinterest-worthy routines where birds sing as you pour your coffee, your planner practically glows with holy light, and your to-do list checks itself off.

But if I’m being honest, most days, my life looks more like a Pinterest fail than a success. I mean, really—how many planners have I started, convinced that this time I’ll stick to it? How many fresh routines have I tried, only to abandon them by day three? And don’t even get me started on the self-help books stacking up on my nightstand. Spoiler alert: they’re not reading themselves.

And here’s the kicker: even when I sit down to read my Bible or do a devotional, I somehow manage to turn it into yet another list of things I think I’m not doing well enough. I’m over here, highlighting verses like Psalm 55:22—“Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you”—and thinking, Yup, need to do that better. But then I close the Bible, move on to the next thing, and forget all about that glorious promise of rest and relief that Jesus is offering.

So why do we do this? Why do we compartmentalize Jesus, keeping him in a little box labeled “Spiritual Life” and only opening it up when we need something, like a genie in a bottle? It’s like we’re saying, “Jesus, I’ll handle my diet, fitness, finances, work, and, ahem, my sex life, but I’ll definitely let you know when I’ve got a spiritual question.”

Let’s Talk About Diet & Fitness with Jesus

First up, diet and fitness. I’m willing to bet that most of us have tried at least one diet experiment in our lifetime. And, if you’re like me, you’ve probably invited everyone and their dog into that experiment—except Jesus. I mean, why would the Savior of the world care about my carb intake, right?

But here’s the thing: Jesus does care. He’s not just interested in the “big” stuff, like your salvation and spiritual growth. He cares about your health, your well-being, and yes, even that stubborn five pounds you’ve been trying to lose since 2019. So, why not bring him into the conversation? I’ve started asking Jesus to guide my food choices, to give me strength when I’m tempted to dive headfirst into a bag of chips, and to help me find joy in taking care of the body he gave me. And let me tell you—it’s made a world of difference.

Jesus and Jokes—Why He’s the Funniest Guy I Know

Okay, confession time: I love telling Jesus jokes. And I think he’s hilarious. I mean, have you ever thought about the fact that Jesus created humor? He’s the source of all the funny things that make us laugh until we cry. So, why wouldn’t he appreciate a good joke?

Sometimes, when I’m feeling down, I’ll crack a joke and imagine Jesus laughing with me. It’s such a small, simple thing, but it reminds me that Jesus isn’t some far-off, untouchable deity. He’s close, he’s personal, and he’s got a great sense of humor. So, the next time you’re feeling a bit gloomy, try telling Jesus a joke. I bet he’ll laugh with you.

Yep, We’re Going There—Sex and Jesus

Now, let’s talk about sex. Yep, I said it. It’s one of those topics that we tend to compartmentalize, thinking, Jesus doesn’t really want to hear about this, right? But here’s the thing—if there’s any area of our lives that the devil loves to mess with, it’s this one. And when we keep it locked away in a cage, refusing to open up to Jesus about it, we’re just giving the enemy more power.

Jesus wants to be a part of every aspect of our lives—including our sex lives. Whether you’re single, married, or somewhere in between, Jesus wants to help you navigate this tricky area with grace and wisdom. So, don’t be afraid to bring it to him. He’s not shocked, embarrassed, or uncomfortable. He’s there, ready to help you break free from the chains that might be holding you back.

Money Talks—But Do We Talk to Jesus About Money?

Ah, money. Whether you’re stuck in the mindset that Jesus wants you to be poor and struggling or you just don’t want him meddling in your bank accounts, money is another area where we often shut Jesus out. But here’s the deal: Jesus doesn’t want you to struggle financially, nor does he want you to hoard wealth like Scrooge McDuck.

What he wants is for you to trust him with your finances. He wants to guide you in making wise decisions, in being generous, and in finding contentment with what you have. So, the next time you’re stressing over bills or feeling tempted to splurge on something you don’t need, take it to Jesus. Ask him for wisdom and peace, and watch how he provides for you in ways you never imagined.

Work—Even in Secular Jobs, Jesus Cares

Now, let’s talk about work. Unless you’re working in Christian ministry (and even if you are), you might not think Jesus cares much about the details of your 9-to-5. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Jesus is interested in every aspect of your work life, from the tough conversations with coworkers to the creative brainstorming sessions where you’re trying to come up with the next big idea. He wants to be involved in it all. So, the next time you’re about to head into a meeting, why not say a quick prayer? Ask Jesus to guide your words, to give you wisdom, and to bless the work of your hands. You might be surprised at how much smoother things go when you do.

Why Are We So Hard-Wired to Do Things Ourselves?

So, why do we find it so hard to invite Jesus into every area of our lives? I think it boils down to a few things: lack of belief, fear of hearing wrong, forgetfulness, and, let’s be real, sin.

Take Moses, for example. He didn’t believe he could lead the Israelites out of Egypt, so he ran away into the desert until God showed up in a burning bush. Or Abraham, who lied about Sarah being his sister because he was afraid for his life. And let’s not forget Job, who lost everything and still had to fight to keep his faith. These stories show us that even the greatest heroes of the Bible struggled with unbelief.

Then there’s the fear that we’ll hear wrong, or worse, be led astray by the enemy’s voice. But Jesus promises us in John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” If we’re truly seeking him, he’s not going to let us get it wrong.

And let’s not forget about how forgetful and busy we can be. We get caught up in the day-to-day grind, and before we know it, we’ve gone hours—sometimes days—without talking to Jesus. But just like in the Old Testament, where the Israelites forgot God time and time again, we need to remind ourselves daily to stay connected to him.

Finally, there’s sin. It creates a barrier between us and God, making it harder to hear his voice and feel his presence. But the good news is that Jesus has already dealt with that barrier. All we have to do is turn back to him, and he’s right there, ready to help us get back on track.

Practical Wrap-Up: Let’s Invite Jesus into the Everyday

So, what would it look like if we could break through all these obstacles and invite Jesus into every area of our lives? What if talking to him became as natural as breathing?

This week, I challenge you to find a part of your routine that’s mindless or where your mind tends to wander. Maybe it’s while you’re making dinner, doing the dishes, or pulling weeds. Whatever it is, turn that time into a conversation with Jesus.

Start by simply asking him to join you. Let him know that you want to have more two-way dialogue with him. If you’re worried about getting it wrong, try silencing your inner monologue with a few deep breaths and ask Jesus to take control of your thoughts.

And if you’re not sure what to talk about, ask him some fun questions: What’s one thing that made him laugh today? What’s one thing that made him cry? What’s one thing he wants you to know right now?

Let’s make Jesus a natural part of our everyday lives and see how it transforms us from the inside out. Because I promise you—he’s more than ready to be invited in.
